A day in the life… with Mike Brown, Branch Manager

20th June 2022

“An average day in my role is quite sporadic!” says Mike Brown, Branch Manager of our Hull and Leeds branches.

“I could be dealing with a customer problem, coaching my team or working with a fitter on a job – it could be a multitude of things.”

Mike has been part of the operational side of Selwood for a long time, joining the company 13 years ago as a Hire Representative to now working his way up to Branch Manager. He ensures the operational needs of the business are carried out across Hull, Leeds and the surrounding areas.

Mike also oversees the legal responsibilities of the business within his branches, such as health and safety.

“I look after the fitters, the hire desk, drivers and electricians, making sure things are running efficiently. Nothing is such a problem that it can’t be fixed!”

Training exceptional people

If Mike is not handling operational tasks he will typically be working closely with his team.

“My day to day now is mostly about people management. I used to be on the ground, specifying pumps to the customer but now I’m much more people focused.

“The biggest part of my role is listening to people, their concerns, and ideas, and working with them to resolve anything that comes up. I try to educate and give people ownership of a problem as it helps with their development and progression.

“All the core training that is required for our team is fed through from the training department. On top of that, if there is anything I can coach on, I will do so daily.

“I have 1 to 1’s with my team where I can pick up on any training needs in specific areas along with giving them a time to talk to me about anything that they want to raise.  Then we can give them the tools they need to do the job and to keep progressing within their own careers.”

Mike invests a lot of time in his team, is keen to help them grow in the business and “be the best at Selwood”!
