Selwood’s pumping solutions team stepped in to minimise disruption at a Southern Water treatment works when a failed pump needed replacement.

Specialists from Selwood’s pump rental team were called out to an outfall station at Shoreham-by-Sea, where a canister pump had developed a fault.

A replacement unit was not immediately available, and the team were also faced with the challenge of limited access to the wet well – so a fast and practical alternative was required.

Selwood’s solution was to bypass the faulty canister using a 140kw electric pump. The flow was taken from the wet well and diverted via temporary pipework to the discharge point, bypassing the faulty unit. Selwood’s electrician used on-site power to drive the pump, eliminating the need for generators and minimising cost and emissions.

The solution allowed the station to continue to operate while a replacement was found, and the job completed.
