Engineering and construction experts, VolkerStevin, were called in to deal with a major road landslip in the North East, with complicated ground conditions, on a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). They called on our pump and plant hire teams in Middlesbrough and Newcastle to work on the job.
On top of the restrictions that come with such a site, we encountered failure of a retaining wall, running sand over sandstone artesian springs, a major influx of groundwater and boggy conditions.
As the main thoroughfare into Rothbury, with live utility services running into the town, gas electricity and telecoms were at risk.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, our Pump Hire specialists used the latest pump technology – bringing in brand new additions to the fleet - to remove groundwater in the area of the landslip. We also supplied new hoses and fittings to machines already being used on site. The team provided our signature expert on-site support and 24/7 call-out service.
Our Plant Hire team then came to the rescue when VolkerStevin were let down by another provider, supplying quality equipment to suit their stringent health and safety requirements - specifically 9 tonne and 6 tonne swivel skip dumpers, 8 tonne and 14 tonne zero tail excavators and 120 rollers.
Additional safety measures included adding warning detectors to protect site workers in close proximity to dumpers, checking valves for all excavators (on both the boom and dipper arm) and servicing, testing and inspection paperwork to satisfy VolkerStevin’s safety rules. We also provided a rapid response service to any breakdowns on the site.
VolkerStevin and their client Northumberland County Council were highly impressed with the part that we played in this complex civil engineering project – ensuring there was no loss in man hours and very little downtime with the pumps and plant, minimising the impact to the local community.
