Households and businesses rely on a secure water supply and water companies cannot risk the network being compromised.

Welsh Water was presented with such a scenario that required robust and ultra-reliable solutions when a 450mm pipe suspended beneath a pedestrian footbridge had to be replaced. The whole section, spanning across the River Taff in Pontypridd, needed to be removed and replaced as part of an ongoing programme.

The contractor, Lewis Civil Engineering, a specialist in water and general utility infrastructure works, needed to isolate this part of the network and divert water to ensure supply was not disrupted for around 23,000 homes and businesses.

Selwood’s pump rental specialists provided a bespoke service for Lewis Civil Engineering, visiting the location and carrying out a full site inspection several months before the work was due to take place.

Selwood’s High Head H pumps provided the ideal solution to the complex job, thanks to their many performance benefits. These super-efficient dewatering pumps are optimal in any high head and high pressure application and offer supreme ease-of-use and maintenance.

Selwood supplied Lewis Civil Engineering with three H diesel pumps, each housed in the company’s world-leading Super Silent canopies. The Super Silent canopies meant that the client did not have to worry about noise generation as the pumps operated round-the-clock over a four-week period in an urban area.

The pumps were supplied with fuel cubes, ideal for this size of application, and Lewis Civil Engineering connected each pump to a series of gate valves and butt-fused pipework. This allowed all three pumps to be used collectively to fill and top up a number of reservoirs to ensure there was no disruption in water supply to Welsh Water customers.

As a total solution, Lewis Civil Engineering provided the client with a range of Selwood pumps, together with a 24-hour engineering management site service from Brain Associates Ltd.

The service not only provided security, but hourly information for pump analysis, refueling and switch over assistance, ensuring that the operation was run smoothly with no outage.

Brain Associates are renowned for their quality and reliability in providing specialist services to the water and marine industries for over 20 years and are experts in media transfer and tank integrity inspection.

Selwood and Lewis Civil Engineering, both priding themselves on an unrivalled health and safety record, worked in unison to complete the job efficiently and seamlessly. The proximity of Selwood’s local branch and the ready availability of pump specialists, together with a 24/7 emergency call-out system, gave the client peace of mind as the job was carried out to completion.
